On April 12, 2024, CGIAR marked a significant milestone with the official launch of its Climate Community of Practice (COP). As part of the Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Impact Area Platform, this initiative brings together over 600 scientists from various CGIAR centers, forming a collaborative hub for climate-focused research and action. With the COP's inauguration, the Platform will initiate smaller thematic working groups, fostering the advancement of climate knowledge within the CGIAR network. Looking ahead, the Platform aims to broaden its reach by incorporating climate scientists from outside CGIAR, ensuring a diverse and inclusive approach to tackling climate challenges. One of these universities is Lukenya University in Kenya where more than 500 students attended the information session of the Food Systems Innovation Challenge. In the Food Systems Innovation challenge 18 teams representing nine univeristies will compete for the best design of a food system innovation. The teams are challenged to design a project plan and to implement it during the challenge period from April 2024 to September 2024. One of the criteria for the project design is its alignment with the country's national pathways to sustainable food systems. However, what exactly constitutes a national pathway?

“National Pathways to sustainable food systems”

In the Food Systems Innovation challenge , 18 teams representing nine universities engage in a competition to design a food system innovation which is in alignment with the national pathways of a specific country. While we are working towards the start of the Food Systems Innovation challenge we would like to share an example of an innovation that can be supported through the challenge. Just like this year Lukenya University in Kenya also joined WUR Student Challenges in 2021. Their Hydropan team, consisting of five members, came up with the innovative climate-smart hydroelectric technology: the hydropan.

On 23 May, the parliamentary commission for Foreign Trade & Development Cooperation will discuss the Step-by-step plan for Global Food Security. 
This plan was submitted to parliament by Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Liesje Schreinemacher and Minister of Agriculture, Nature & Food Quality Piet Adema in December 2022. 
The commission will also discuss the outcomes of the UN Water conference, a letter regarding Biodiversity in international policy, and a structural knowledge hub in 'combination countries'
