Kenya is a regional economic powerhouse with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and an economy closely linked to agriculture. The Netherlands has long been an important agricultural trade and knowledge partner, a relationship reaffirmed during the 2025 state visit. Yet Kenya’s progress is uneven. While economic centres and fertile regions continue to grow, arid and semi-arid lands face persistent food and nutrition insecurity, poverty and increasing climate risks. Rising youth unemployment, corruption and political tensions add further pressure. In Kenya, NFP works across various domains—such as dairy, cold chains, the water–food nexus, insects for feed, agri-energy, and food systems finance—to support a diverse range of partnerships. Via ReConnAct, NFP aligns these current and developing initiatives with the country's national and county food system goals, which are defined in the newly created national food and nutrition security strategy alongside the national pathway to sustainable food systems. Furthermore, given that food systems policy execution is decentralized to the county level, NFP prioritizes capacity building and cooperation with local authorities, beginning with Nakuru county.
