On 17 April NWO, together with CGIAR and the Netherlands Food Partnership, will host an online matchmaking session for the call for Senior Experts of the NL-CGIAR Senior Expert Programme II. The aim of this session is to connect Senior researchers from Dutch organisations with CGIAR Research Initiatives, Impact area Platforms and the Private Partnerships for Impact unit (PP4I), in order to co-develop the Senior Expert assignment.

During a lively discussion at the Dutch Pavilion at the Agro-Food trade show in Lagos three main takeaways were identified. For building lasting and effective partnerships three elements are essential:
1.  TRUST. No cooperation without trust
2. BROAD DIVERSITY of stakeholders
3. EXIT STRATEGY - when will participants exit and what will remain in place


Specific attention was asked for youth in the Nigerian context: not only they should be included, but also the enabling environment for their specific needs such as access to finance, networks, knowledge should be improved.

With a current population of 1.4 billion, projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, African nations grapple with the challenge of achieving economic transformation while navigating environmental risks. Africa Works! 2024, themed Africas Green Industrialisation/Made in Africa, will spotlight green solutions for sustainable economic diversification. We will explore opportunities in circular food production, renewable energy, and sustainable agro-logistics, asking how the private sector, both Dutch and African, can contribute to a sustainable and inclusive future for the continent.

The call is now open for submissions with a closing date on 11 June 2024. This call supports the participation of Dutch research organisations in CGIAR with the aim of advancing knowledge, knowledge use, and enhancing innovation for global food and nutrition security through cooperation between the Netherlands and CGIAR. The matchmaking will provide an opportunity to make new connections, and to learn more about the selected Research Initiatives, Impact area Platforms and the Private Partnerships for Impact unit (PP4I).
