The Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) Strategy and Action Plan (2026-2035) was adopted by an Extraordinary Summit of the African Union held in Kampala, Uganda, in January 2025. The associated Kampala CAADP Declaration on "Building Resilient Agrifood Systems in Africa" outlines a 10-year plan to transform Africa's agrifood systems. It will build on the successes and deepen the progress achieved after two decades of CAADP implementation, during which Africa significantly improved in economic and agricultural growth, poverty reduction, nutrition outcomes, and agricultural trade expansion. The Kampala CAADP Declaration will come into effect on January 1, 2026.

Nutrition for Growth Paris 2025: what to expect?

My name is Bine Liem and I have attended the 11th plenary session of the IPBES. During the conference, I was part of the Dutch delegation. In this delegation, I had the chance to fulfill my role as a Dutch UN youth representative on Biodiversity and Food. A youth representative bridges Dutch youth with international politics. NFP invited me to share my reflections on my attendance of IPBES, the final contents of the Nexus and Transformative Change Assessment reports, and the relevance to a food systems approach. This, together with a critical reflection, is what compiles this blog.

With the increase in demand for milk and dairy products in the coming decade, both in quantity and quality, dairy offers very good prospects for both entrepreneurial smallholders as well as for medium and large-scale farmers in developing countries. At this moment, but also in the coming years, smallholders will produce the bulk of the milk. Sustained fair inclusion of commercial smallholders in the growing formal dairy sector will only be possible if they meet volume and quality requirements, through well-organized bulking and chilling activities and further improvement of productivity and seasonal stability. This implies that more work needs to be done on the development and realization of inclusive business models, either by farmer organizations, progressive processors, other value chain actors, or blends of these.

The dairy sector in East Africa can reach sustainable growth through the adoption of inclusive business models (Makoni et al., 2014). Innovative approaches to dairy sector development are emerging where inclusive business models are coupled with demand-driven, market-led support systems and public-private partnerships (Rademaker et al., 2017).

Inclusive Dairy Business Models in East Africa

This papers describes the Ethiopian forage sub-sector. It covers a wide range of aspects, from technical aspects such as
available forage species, quality, seasonality, preservation, seeds, planting material, fertiliser use, mechanisation, inputs
and services, to more institutional aspects, such as the forage market, education and training, environmental footprint, and
policy framework. The paper provides recommendations aimed at enhancing the availability of quality forages, especially
for the Ethiopian dairy sector. The report is part of Theme 2: Forages and Nutrition of the Netherlands East African Dairy
Partnership project (NEADAP), an initiative of the Dutch government for learning and sharing amongst different dairy
sectors and projects in East Africa.

Sustainable Forage Production in Ethiopia

These Papers describe the current situation of Uganda's forage sub-sector and give recommendations for sustainable intensification of forage production. As regards the current situation, it reports on available forage species and their quality, seasonality, preservation, forage seeds and planting material, fertilizer use, mechanisation, inputs and services, the forage market, education and training, innovations, sustainable forage production, and policies and regulations affecting the forage sub-sector. The paper further gives directions and recommendations to intensify forage production and enhance the availability of quality forages, to drive an environmentally sustainable dairy sector towards increased productivity and enhanced competitiveness. This is an output of Theme 2: Forages and Nutrition of Dairy Cows of the Netherlands East African Dairy Partnership project (NEADAP). NEADAP is an initiative led by the Netherlands Government aimed at learning and sharing amongst different dairy sectors and projects in East Africa.
