Mumberes Farmers’ Cooperative Society milk collection plant

A collaborative effort between Mumberes Farmers' Cooperative Society, Biofoods and Agriterra's Acting Now Project is significantly improving the lives of dairy farmers in Baringo County, Kenya. By implementing a quality-based milk payment system, the initiative is empowering farmers with increased earnings, boosting overall milk production, and ensuring access to nutritious milk for their families. This project, initially geared towards improved milk quality and productivity, is delivering on its promise of food security and reliable income for these hard-working farmers.

Mumberes Cooperative, with over 3,000 members, has seen a significant rise in milk collection – from an average of 11,131 kgs daily in June 2023 to a record-breaking 16,000 kgs in January 2024. This growth is impressive, but the real game-changer is Biofoods' new payment system. They pay based on milk quality, not just quantity. Bio Foods Ltd is a leading processor and marketer of premium dairy products in Kenya prioritising quality and sustainability. They source milk through a supplier incentive program that rewards quality and hygienic practices.

This quality-based milk payment system considers 17 factors like bacterial count, milk solids, fat content, and even frothing capacity. Since its implementation, Mumberes farmers have witnessed a jump in their per-kilogram earnings from 31.5 Kenyan shillings in January 2024 to over 45 shillings by March – a fantastic 30% increase! The collaboration between the organisations in working to scale this down to individual farmers, ensuring that each farmer gets paid based on the quality parameters of his/her produce.

When milk quality falls short, Biofoods works directly with the cooperative (Mumberes) to find solutions. Additionally, their Dairy Development Team, alongside Agriterra's expertise, visits farms to optimize cow feed and improve milk quality, ultimately leading to better-tasting dairy products.

Investing in the Future: ACTING Now for sustainable milk production

To support Mumberes Cooperative raise the quality of their milk, Agriterra's ACTING Now Project has provided resources to improve various aspects of the activities of the cooperative:

  • Feed and Fodder Production: They’ve helped acquire a new forage harvester to ensure proper harvesting and storage of feed, leading to better milk production, especially during dry seasons. They've also invested (through co-funding) in commercial silage production, offering members a reliable source of high-quality feed.

  • Extension Services: The ACTING Now Project has boosted the Cooperative by providing additional extension officers. These experts are on the ground, empowering farmers through training on critical topics like feed and fodder management and cow health. This knowledge is key to unlocking higher-quality milk production. By equipping farmers with the latest dairy practices, the extension officers are playing a critical role. They're fostering a culture of informed decision-making, ultimately leading to a more sustainable and profitable future for Mumberes farmers.

Quality Control: Agriterra has assisted with recruiting and funding a milk quality control officer. Additionally, they're helping establish a milk testing laboratory within the cooperative. This will allow for on-site monitoring and identification of areas for improvement, enabling farmers to consistently produce high-quality milk.
