Investing in Cold Chain Solutions

Article header image

Food loss and waste (FLW) is a critical issue in East Africa, where a significant share of fresh produce is lost across the value chain—from farm to market. These losses not only contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, but also represent a waste of natural resources and an abundance of missed economic opportunities. Stimulating investments in businesses that contribute to the reduction of FLW can therefore greatly contribute to more sustainable food systems.

The introduction of cold chain technologies and services, such as refrigeration and cooling systems for food storage and transport, has emerged as a promising solution and has already helped reduce spoilage and improve distribution efficiency. However, to accelerate the implementation of cold chain technologies and services in the private sector, companies that show promise in leading this change will need an extra push, particularly given the challenging business climate and difficulties accessing (affordable) funding.

That is why Netherlands Food Partnership supports a partnership consisting of TRAIDE Foundation, Wageningen University and Research, Rabobank, Enviu, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature, and various Dutch Embassies in East Africa, to identify high-potential cold chain businesses cases. High-potential from an environmental, social as well as an economic angle.

Led by TRAIDE Foundation, the partnership has developed a Bid Book that amplifies 23 promising business cases from East Africa. Ranging from Ethiopia to Tanzania. The majority of these companies have a ‘Dutch touch’; working together with Dutch buyers, investors or programmes. Interviews with these companies, and subsequent assessment of both impact potential as well as commercial scalability, have led to a Bid Book that highlights each company’s characteristics, including their business and operational models.
