Meaningful collaboration among change makers happens in safe and intentional spaces, but how do these spaces look like when they are (co)-created? Within the Biodiversity and Food Systems Partnership, we have built a space that not just strengthens connections but also brings members closer together to make collaboration easier to access.
Where it started
The development of this space was driven by the needs of the community itself. There was a clear demand for a place where connection, collaboration and knowledge exchange could happen more spontaneously, and where members felt comfortable engaging beyond formal structures, with more ownership and initiative coming from the community itself. To make transformative change happen, collaboration is not optional: it is essential. And for collaboration to truly happen, people need spaces where they feel safe to share, question, and connect with others.
What this space makes possible
At its core, this is a community-driven platform: built for the community, by the community. It is a private space where members of the community can interact freely, learn from each other, and share their experiences working at the intersection of biodiversity and food systems across different topics and areas of interest.
One of the most important goals of the platform is to support members in getting to know each other. Who is part of this community? What are they working on? What motivates them? These are questions that often go unanswered in community spaces, creating invisible barriers between stakeholders to strengthen trust. This space aims to lower those barriers and help members to connect with others having similar interests.
It also opens opportunities to engage. By creating a safer environment for interaction, members can share their interests, ideas, and some of the challenges they face in their work. Often, the challenge is not a lack of willingness to collaborate, but simply not knowing who else shares similar interests or could contribute to the work that is already ongoing in their own organizations and contexts. This platform tries to bridge that gap!
Knowledge exchange has also been a key aspect in the community. Here, people can both ask for support and share knowledge resources and tools. In addition, beyond tools and technical knowledge, the community uses this platform as a space for personal reflections, lessons learned, and experiences that can shift perspectives and challenge assumptions.
And finally, the space encourages sharing community updates in a more horizontal way. Instead of information being shared by NFP, this space opens up the opportunity for everyone in the community, to share relevant updates, events, and opportunities that matter to them but can also inspire others in the network.
What is already taking shape
So far, this collaborative space has opened the door to new conversations and connections. Members are engaging more with one another, exchanging tools and resources, and sparking new discussions. While still evolving, it is already clear that the space is helping to strengthen the sense of community.
How do we envision this space?
Looking ahead, we are curious to see how this platform continues to grow. We hope it will support stronger connections and collaborations within the community. At the same time, we recognize that this is an iterative process. As the needs of the community change, so should the space. Rather than building something fixed, we see value in allowing it to evolve: adapting, shifting, and improving over time. In that sense, this space is not just a tool, but a living part of the community itself.
