Delta After Talk #9: Salinity and livestock in the Deltas
“Delta & livestock and other experts, what hurdles do you see in tackling salinity's effect on livestock in the deltas? Let's brainstorm solutions together!”
A collaboration between AMD and WUR, Delta Talks is a webinar series focusing on the development and results of research activities on securing food systems and strengthening climate resilience in the Asian mega-deltas. Here we host a space for further conversation and input from the broader network to share their experiences and expertise. Your experiences matter, and we're eager to learn from them. Let's ignite meaningful discussions together! ______________________________________
For the ninth installment of Delta Talks, the CGIAR Initiative on Asian Mega-Deltas (AMD) and Wageningen University & Research (WUR) presented a webinar on the impacts of climate change to the livestock sector in the deltas.
Ms. Charlotte Verburg, a researcher at WUR, gave an insightful presentation titled Deltas, Livestock, and Climate Change: A Wicked Problem. She talked about the common difficulties faced in livestock production within the deltas, examining the effects of climate change and its impact on livestock production, alongside ongoing and future research in this field.

The presentation indicates that for livestock the heat is even more a bottleneck than the salinity. Interesting insight! Other livestock experts having such experiences? Further, I would welcome inputs from policy makers, to learn how they create possibilities to learn and include new insights on food systems in programmes - as there are so many things changing at the same time!

What I learned from watching the recording is that the crop-livestock interactions in this delta need a redesign. I noted the Q&A centered around alternative crops (replacing rice), what about alternative animal species (replacing cows) to turn crop residues in proteins? One slide (min25) showed the goat population, has anyone looked into their salt tolerance under the current farm conditions? NB I looked up the Hydra of Lerna (min16), which is a water monster with many heads from Greek mythology. Allegedly, it lived in a lake, no clue whether the lake had fresh or brackish water :)
