Egypt

Egypt is a strategically important and relatively stable country in an otherwise volatile region, making it a key partner for long-term food systems collaboration. At the same time, the country faces growing pressure on its food and water systems. Limited freshwater availability, increasing salinity of soils in arid regions and water intrusion in the Nile Delta, rapid population growth, and climate change are placing agricultural production under significant stress. Agriculture is characterised by many smallholder farmers, particularly in the Nile Delta, where land fragmentation limits productivity and the adoption of innovations. At the same time, Egypt is investing heavily in greenhouse horticulture and agricultural modernisation, while businesses continue to face challenges in accessing skilled human capital. NFP is building partnerships that connect Dutch and Egyptian stakeholders around these shared challenges. Current activities focus on strengthening the water-food nexus, saline agriculture, horticulture development, and knowledge exchange between education, research, government and the private sector.
