Rumen8 is a diet formulation tool for dairy and beef cows, including young stock. Dairy advisors and farm managers can use this tool to optimize production and reduce feed costs. Balancing cow diets is especially important in East Africa where roughages have low nutritive values. A balanced diet contains the correct amounts of energy, protein, fibre and minerals that a cows need for maintenance, growth and dairy production. The Rumen8 tool compels the user to record or calculate the cost of each diet ingredient to tabulate the total feed costs.
NEADAP promotes the adoption of Rumen8 in East Africa. However, users need training in animal nutrition and diet calculation to gain full benefit of this tool. The targeted users of Rumen8 are dairy professionals such as farmers and farm coaches, extension staff, livestock consultants, university lecturers and students, feed millers, dairy processors and NGO and government agencies.
